To assume that you won’t be sent to Hell because God is good is to misunderstand the characteristics of being good. First, let me say God truly is good, in fact Jesus said that God and God alone is good:
Matthew 19:17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” And Mark 10:18, Luke 18:19
Now to be good one must be just, they are inseparable. Let me give you an example. I’m sitting in my front yard and I see a man pull up to my neighbor’s house and abduct their kid. Now let’s say I sit there and do nothing about this injustice. I don’t call the cops or try to stop the man. Would you consider me good? I didn’t do anything wrong, right? I would be wrong, and I by no means would I be considered good. In order for a judge to be considered a good judge he must convict Law breakers. If he stood by and constantly did nothing to Law breakers we would impeach that judge. So if God stands by and looks upon all our sins and all the hurt all our sins has caused and does nothing on judgment day He would now cease to be good. In order to be good God MUST be just, they are inseparable.
Now God in His love for us and another example of His goodness has provided a way out for us as He is willing that none should perish:
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is long suffering towards us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. And 1 Timothy 2:3-4
It’s up to us to make that decision. Just like if we appeared before a judge for breaking the law, he could let us go, but we must first agree to his conditions of release before he would pardon us. If we didn’t agree and line up with his request that judge would execute our sentence and we would face that full extent of the law. We would be punished.
