  • Soul Harvest : Common misconceptions : Once saved always saved : Works

    Their argument against losing your salvation.

    To imply that you can lose your salvation leads them to say that we believe we are saved by works. Their typical quote: "If you can lose your salvation then that means you attained your salvation. IT'S A FREE GIFT and a gift is not taken back once it's received. If you can lose it, then your salvation is based on what you do or don't do and not on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ." Now we are NOT saved by works, but they have over simplified this. Also they are using human reasoning which sounds good, but it is not the bible. Although we can’t earn our salvation, we can lose it. God has expected us to do some things: Repent, do His will, confess, endure, continue, ect. According to them if we think we must do anything it is not grace. Faith and works fit together perfectly (James 2:24). The bible is very clear in teaching that there are some things we must do in order to be saved, over and over that theme is the same. So how does Eph. 2:8-9 fit into works? Example: I give you my car for free, you didn’t earn it, it was by my grace alone you received it. Just like God’s free gift of salvation. So now I have given you a car, but you still need to pick it up, put insurance on it, have a valid drivers license, switch the title, put tabs on it, and maintain it with oil changes and other such things. Now if you don’t follow these conditions you could wreck that gift through lack of maintenance or an accident, lose the right to drive it through certain rules violations. Yet that gift was free, you never earned it, but clearly can lose it. Now as to “Attaining” your salvation the bible directly addresses that:

    Philippians 3:11-14 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. There are 7 other verses that use the words “attain” or “obtain” in regards to our salvation. They are: Matthew 19:16-17, 1 Thessalonians 5:9, Luke 20:35, 2 Timothy 2:10, 2 Peter 1:1, 1 Cor. 9:24-27, Hebrews 6:15. As previously stated Jesus said here He laid hold of him, yet Paul still needed to do something. Jesus won’t do it all, He has chosen to leave use choice and free will.

    Def. Obtain: to get possession of, especially by trying; procure
    Def. Attain: to gain through effort; to achieve or accomplish, to arrive at.
    These are a few of many verses that teach the same thing.

    -2 Peter 1:5-11 But for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self control, to self control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. Therefore, brethren be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble, for an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ. Here it tells us that there is something we must do to make sure we make it into Heaven, but to them if we are asked to do anything it is works?

    In these verses we are told to do something in order to be saved, which clearly tells us we have a part to play.

    Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

    2 John 1:8-9 Look to yourself, that we do not lose those things we have worked for, but that we may receive our full reward. Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.

    1 Timothy 6:18-19 Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

    Revelation 2:5-6 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place--unless you repent

    Acts 10:35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.

    1 Corinthians 7:19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters.

    Revelations 22:12-14 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the End, the first and the last.” Blessed are those who do his commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and they may enter through the gates into the city.

    Revelation 3:1-3 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.

    James 2:20-24 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

    1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. Also read: Romans 6:16,
