The thief in the night?
There is this thought that suddenly the “thief in the night” (Jesus) will come than “poof” we will all disappear and this will begin the great tribulation period. First, they have come up with some interesting explanations as to how the world will explain millions disappearing. So many have heard of the rapture of the church, even those outside the faith, isn’t easy to assume they would obviously know what happened? It would be hard to explain millions disappearing. Second, after the “Thief’ comes it is the end, as you will see below, not the beginning of seven years of tribulation. -1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
Note: They shall not escape destruction, but in the pre-tribulation belief they would have seven years to repent. Also the expression “thief in the night” appears in the verses below;
-2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
Here right after the “Day of the Lord” comes as a “thief in the night” the heavens pass away and earth is burned up with a great heat. No tribulation follows it.
-2 Timothy 2:18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.
Wouldn’t a private rapture create worries Paul is warning would not take place?
-Matt. 24:42-51 Matt. Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods. But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
It goes on to use the parables of the “unprepared servant” and the “10 virgins” immediately after to show what it will be like for those unprepared for the “thief” or as it where Christ’s return. In both parables they are shut out of Jesus’ presence with no second chance.
